Coronavirus: make your own face mask

The Coronavirus pandemic has led to skyrocketing demands for protective face masks. Here are some tips and advice on how to make your own masks and how to use them.

How to put on, use, remove and dispose of a mask

  • Before putting on a mask, wash your hands with hand sanitiser or soap and water
  • Put on the mask so that it covers your nose and mouth, and make sure it fits snugly on your face
  • Avoid touching the mask when wearing it; whenever you touch a used mask, wash your hands with hand sanitiser or soap and water
  • When the mask becomes wet, replace it with a new one and do not reuse single-use masks
  • Remove the mask from the back (do not touch the front of the mask); dispose of it immediately in a closed waste bin; wash your hands with hand sanitiser or soap and water
